i've been told (and so has someone else)
so i've been m.i.a. on the blogosphere for a long, long time. i have no excuse. i don't have a pressing job or active lifestyle. in fact, i do the same thing most days--shower, eat, hang out with izzy, run minor errands, cook, clean up messes. oh yeah, i watch t.v. and waste time on facebook too. don't judge. i'm admitting i am a slug.
i guess i'll give you a brief rundown of one particular life event of late.
mid-august: pack up seattle apartment. *we do not check out with landlord, because he happens to be out of town. (this foreshadowing.) return to utah from seattle summer internship
late-august: got ripped off by seattle slumlord on deposit fee. he claimed we did not clean and left the apartment "soiled beyond normal wear and tear." bunch of crock. fought on phone. then, finally agreed to send someone over to clean to get the rest of deposit back.
early-sept: slumlord pretends that bro-in-law did not call in time to go clean. stiffs us our arrangement and deposit.
mid-sept: contact BBB and slumlord's property management company. lodged complaint about slumlords cheaty-cheat face. had proof that on inspection checklist that EVERYTHING was ok, so there should not have been a $120 cleaning fee charge. got email from prop. mgr. that we would get our $ back. semi-celebration!
late-sept: received check in mail! ha slumlord! take that!
so i did get an email from said slumlord that he was in the right for charging us, but out of courtesy was gonna give us our $ back. hmmm...if he wanted to be so courteous, he shouldn't have been a jerk when we asked him what he was charging us a cleaning fee for and just given us our $ back when we asked for it initially. my guess is that he wanted to stick it to us one last time (in his own dumb way), even though i know he was told by his boss that it needed to be returned per the proof we had from his check-out inspection.
we are now $120 happier. lesson learned-we will never leave an apartment without having done a physical walk-thru inspection.

Welcome back! A bad landlord can ruin your life. I had a maintenance guy use his key to get into my apartment and then proceed to steal tons of electronics from me and my roommates. after they fired him but we were told there was nothing we could do about it. If that wouldve happened now there is no way that wouldve been the end of it. I think it's true most of the time that if you don't stop pushing it then you'll usually win (as you have proved). Good work getting your money back.
reminds me of the jerk landlord from the place we lived in on university. way to fight to the end, i kind of gave up cause i just didnt want to deal with him.
So glad you got your money back! What a pain, though... I hate dealing with stuff like that. When we moved out of the Truman, I knew the landlord would be sketchy, so I had my papa go with Kirk so that the landlord wouldn't give us any crap. He kept them waiting for almost 2 hours... when he finally showed up, Papa was so furious, he gave the landlord a piece of his mind... the landlord didn't even look at the whole apartment. He just gave us a check for the full deposit and left! Ha!
ellen, it is true that if you don't push an unfair issue with a sketchy proprietor/landlord--nothing is gonna happen for you. most landlords bank on that.
mary, that landlord was a total jerk.
eva, good for you! i hear that a lot of landlords in the provo/orem area are super sketchy, because the landlord/tenant laws really are unbalanced. now that pete and i are landlords, it's super frustrating to me to see people get ripped off--because i don't feel that it's necessary or just. for us, it's only justified if the place is a wreck. thankfully, we have only had that happen once. but it was all paint and a little bit of dent repair.
when he finally showed up, Papa was so furious, he gave the landlord a piece of his mind.
It was a very great idea! Just wanna say thank you for the information you have diffused. Just continue composing this kind of post. I will be a loyal reader, thanks a lot
